Refrigerator not Cooling

Refrigerator not Cooling

If your refrigerator is not cooling properly, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try to diagnose and fix the issue. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to troubleshoot a refrigerator that is not cooling.

Step 1: Check the Power
Before you start troubleshooting your fridge, ensure that it is plugged in and receiving power. Check the power outlet and the cord for any damage. You can also try plugging in another appliance to the same outlet to verify that it is working. Also, ensure you have power to other parts of your home and there are not issues with any breakers or outlets that need to be reset. Please see these articles No Power in Kitchen or Bathroom

Step 2: Adjust the Temperature Settings
If your fridge is not cooling properly, the first thing you should check is the temperature settings. The temperature controls are usually located inside the fridge, on the top or back wall. Make sure the temperature settings are set correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Step 3: Check the Condenser Coils
The condenser coils are responsible for removing heat from the refrigerant. Over time, they can become clogged with dust and debris, which can reduce their efficiency and cause the fridge to overheat. If possible check the condenser coils, remove the kick plate or grille at the bottom of the fridge, then use a vacuum or brush to clean the coils. This is not a necessary step for a tenant but it may resolve your issue.

Step 4: Inspect the Evaporator Fan
The evaporator fan is responsible for circulating cold air throughout the fridge. If it is not working properly, the fridge will not cool properly. To check the evaporator fan, open the freezer and listen for the sound of the fan running. If it is not running, and the items have been defrosted please contact us.

Step 5: Check the Door Seals
If the door seals are not sealing properly, warm air can enter the fridge, causing it to overwork and not cool properly. To check the door seals, close the fridge door on a piece of paper or dollar bill. If you can easily pull the paper or bill out, the seals may be damaged and need to be replaced.

Step 6: Check the Compressor
The compressor is responsible for compressing the refrigerant and pumping it through the system. If it is not working properly, the fridge will not cool properly. To check the compressor, listen for the sound of it running. If it is not running, try unplugging the fridge for several hours to allow it to cool down, then plug it back in and listen for the sound of the compressor starting up. If it still does not run, please contact us.

Step 7. Make Sure There's Room
The fridge needs to have room for the air to circulatre. If your fridge has too many items or is blocking the fan air cannot move freely. Please ensure your fridge is not over stuffed.
