Handling Clogged Bathroom Sinks and Bathtubs

Handling Clogged Bathroom Sinks and Bathtubs

Clogged sinks and bathtubs are common issues in residential properties. This article provides guidelines on how to address various types of clogs, emphasizing the use of tub drain filters.

Understanding Your Responsibility:

Per the lease agreement, tenants are responsible for any clogs resulting from the buildup of hair, soap scum, or similar blockages. If such clogs occur and require professional intervention, the cost for these services will be billed to the tenant. However, issues related to the internal plumbing system are the responsibility of the property owner.

Preventive Measures:

Use of Tub Drain Filters:
Install tub drain filters in bathtubs and sinks. These filters catch hair, soap pieces, and other debris, preventing them from entering the drainage system. Regularly clean these filters to maintain their effectiveness.

Products like these work well:

Silicone Shower Trap:

TubShroom:

Please note products like the TubShroom are not always compatible with your tub drain. We recommend the Silicone Traps as they are more cost effective and can simply be placed on top of any sort of drain.

Regular Cleaning:

Regular cleaning of sinks and bathtubs can prevent the buildup of soap scum and hair. Use appropriate cleaning agents and follow a weekly cleaning routine.

DIY Solutions for Unclogging:

  1. Boiling Water: Pouring boiling water directly into the drain can sometimes dissolve soap scum or grease that's causing a minor clog.

  2. Plunger: Use a plunger to create suction and dislodge clogs. Ensure a good seal around the drain for the best effect.

  3. Baking Soda and Vinegar: Pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar down the drain. Cover the drain and wait for about an hour before flushing with hot water.

  4. Plumbing Snake: A plumbing snake can be inserted into the drain to break up or retrieve clogs. Be gentle to avoid damaging the pipes.

Products like this are good to keep in the house and will work for many small clogs involving hair

  5. Chemical Cleaners: Over-the-counter chemical drain cleaners can be effective but use them sparingly as they can be harsh on the plumbing system. When possible always try an organic approach first and then a product that is natural without harsh chemicals that can damage pipes.

When to Contact Management:

If you've tried these methods and the clog persists, it may be an issue with the property's plumbing system. In such cases, please contact property management for assistance. Remember, if the clog is found to be due to tenant negligence, such as the accumulation of hair or improper items flushed down the drain, the tenant will be responsible for the cost of repair.
